The Meet Market: Cafe Memento

Has Kevin Bacon ever worked with David Strathairn...?

Why yes, IC -- in The River Wild, with Meryl Streep. (And I didn't even have to look at IMDB.com! :)

Anyhoo, thanks for the SGUH and generous comments (and emails from some of you, which I've yet to read, but will ASAP; gosh, I hate being offline for a week at a time!), and for your patience, etc., with yours truly. No, really -- thanks!

(where is the 'burgh?)

"The 'Burgh", miss sunshine, is Pittsburgh, which is where my parents live and where I just came back from visiting for the past week. Highlights: a visit to Primanti's for a sweet sausage sandwich (and chili, too!), and getting ideas for storage solutions at IKEA. (Yes, my life really is that superficial right now that those were the highlights.)

In Cafe-related news, I'm so sorry to hear your news about your friends, fwmom. That's incredibly sad.

*respectful pause*

As for your question about a bigger-capacity TiVo, fw, I've had similar thoughts recently, since I also just bought the same 40MB version that you have -- but I've decided that I'm going to keep it, and then augment it with a recordable DVD deck in a couple years after a) the electronics industry finally reaches a consensus about the next-generation DVD format, and b) the prices on such devices come down more.

Speaking of electronic devices (oh, no -- not that kind, ajra! Get your mind out of the gutter! ;), my brother's home theater system? Un. F*cking. Believable. Five MartinLogan electro$tatic $peaker$ (!!!!!) -- yup, two of their medium-size towers for surround channels! -- and absolutely primo deluxo electronics for the amp, DVD player, etc. (And a lovely Sony WEGA TV, too.) We watched the extended version of The Two Towers, and for the entire duration, I just could not believe how good it sounded, and how beautiful it looked. And I thought my setup at the Tate Estate was nice. Sheesh!

In still other Cafe-related business, to move or not to move, eh, Doctor Funk? Hard to say -- I can see all kinds of pluses or minuses either way. But I guess what it would come down to for me is that if things didn't work out, I could always move back -- so since you're askin', I'd say go for it, bay-bee! And please do keep us updated -- many of us here (oh, wait -- only me? Okay, then.) are living our dreams vicariously through you! (Also? I cut 'n' pasted what you said about depression, because it was really poignant. So... thanks!)

BTW, I've never seen Footloose, and I don't really have any desire to. (Although I'm not actively avoiding ever seeing it, as is the case with Beaches. :) Speaking of fillums, my fave of this past year -- the tragically undermarketed, underseen, eentsy-teentsy indie Raising Victor Vargas -- made New York Times critic Elvis Mitchell's Top Ten of 2003 list. Woo-hoo! [*insert umpteenth reminder to fellow Cafe patrons to please, please go rent Raising Victor Vargas here*]

*waves to gaia, a fellow Vargas aficianado, in Gay Paree*
*waves to our very own globetrotting rachem, too, just for fun*

Well, I could go on about movies and home entertainment gear and sexual identity crises all day, but for now, it's good to be back, hope to see y'all here in (what I sincerely hope for all of us is a very healthy, happy) 2004, and...

*pulls cord*
*banner unfurls from ceiling that says...*

*´¯`·.¸.· HAPPY NEW YEAR to the CAFÉ MEMENTO! ·.¸.·´¯`*

Unraveling Velvet: Bitterness about 24

Yea, I still watch, but the burning desire is gone. Ive been downlaoding the eps and wathcing it in small bits whenever I have some spare time. Its good television, but I just don't base my time around it. I still do that for some shows, but 24 has.... become very repitious. I need a change in venue. Im so tired of seeing LA as the center of the show, for no reason.

Cast In Other Roles: Who Else Are They Working For?

According to the local newspaper, Jesse "Gael" Borrego will appear at the Jump-Start Theater tomorrow night right here in San Antonio, Texas. The show is called "Cirque du Jump" and is a bunch of short pieces by (mostly local) dancers, actors, musicians, performance artists, etc. The whole thing is a little surreal, and if there hadn't been an accompanying photo of Borrego I'd have missed the story entirely.

ETA the only info on Jesse's role in this gig is that he will do "something circusy."

Ratings and Scheduling

Ratings info for Tuesday, Jan. 6, from Marc Berman's column at Mediaweek.com.

At 9 p.m., although NBC's Frasier (#1: 8.9/12) beat ABC's According to Jim (#3: 7.4/10) by 20 percent in the overnights, Jim held a considerable 28 percent advantage among adults 18-49 (Jim: 5.0/12, Frasier: 3.9/10). Jim also outdelivered the tired Dr. Crane by 435,000 viewers (Jim: 11,354, Frasier: 10.919).

On Fox, 24 ranked fourth in the overnights (6.6/ 9) but second among adults 18-49 (4.1/10). Also in the 9 p.m. hour were repeats of the WB's One Tree Hill (2.8/ 4) and UPN comedies Rock Me Baby (2.3/ 3) and Girlfriends (2.1/ 3).

In the battle of the 9:30 p.m. sitcoms, although NBC's Happy Family (#2: 7.4/10) also beat ABC's Less Than Perfect (#4: 6.2/ 9) in the overnights, Less Than Perfect bested the John Larroquette/Christine Baranski sitcom by 11 percent in adults 18-49 (4.2/10 to 3.8/ 9).

Unfortunately, the Futon Critic has stopped reporting Nielsen ratings. But based on this report, Berman may be picking up the slack in offering up 18-49 numbers--in the past, he hasn't coughed up 18-49s with any regularity. He downplays the importance of 18-49s in assessing CBS's Tuesday lineup, but the truth is that advertisers just don't pay CBS very much for older-skewing dramas, and a show like "24" is much more profitable for a network than a show like "The Guardian" for that reason.

Meanwhile, to continue the previous discussion of "Jim" vs. "24":
Maybe "Jim" beats "24" because there are lots of fat American guys who eat too many Whoppers and would like to fantasize that they could get a wife as hot as Courtney Thorne-Smith. "24" makes them feel too insecure because Kiefer Sutherland is in really good shape, and ready to beat the crap out of terrorists round the clock (well, except when severely jonesing for smack). Is that what you meant, Mr. Rulz, when you said "people aren't always what they watch?" You're saying the "Jim" viewers aren't all fat guys? Or what?

My feelings about "Jim" are best summed up by Mr. Wm. Steven Humphrey, of thestranger.com:

Another comedy premise that makes my chilidog lunch leap out of my stomach is the "Fat, Ugly Guy with the Hot Wife" sitcom. Now, I'm not denying that occasionally a fat, ugly guy--THROUGH SHEER DUMB LUCK--sometimes winds up with a hot, sexy wife. There are all sorts of reasons for this. Perhaps she's blind--or maybe retarded. But here's my point: There are dozens of sitcoms with this premise, which is statistically fawking impossible!! The worst offender is, of course, According to Jim, starring ugly, fat guy Jim Belushi and hot wife Courtney Thorne-Smith. What a waste of a sweet piece of ass! Just the thought of that blubbery whale on top of that juicy mama makes me want to BLEAAHHHHHH!

ETA: Oops, Ms. RULZ, sorry about the gender confusion. The "Louis" part confused me, I guess. As an editor, though, I still don't understand the phrase "people aren't always what they watch."

Reflections on All Seasons

I think that one thing that really, for me, made season 2 worthwhile was that it finally conveyed what I wanted to see in Season 1.

That is, a feeling of a tapestry of events - like a Paul Thomas Anderson film or the like - there were so many stories going on, all linked together, and occuring at the same time, but there was just so much going on.

But I think this was partly because the overlying question seemed to be "who is evil". Thus, in season 1, every scene had to be from the point-of-view of one of the five main cast members, or focus on an established bad guy. Season 2 had so many concurrent storylines, often taking place within the same building (like the bunker, or at CTU) and even when they were annoying, there was so much to watch that it felt much more like we were watching the events of one day.

Sadly, I don't see it happening this season, because at the moment it seems we have just three storylines: the action at New/Mexico, the exposition at CTU and the "political intrigue" at Palmer's.
